Norway now notifies people automatically when they are removed as director or CEO
From May 2026, Brønnøysundregistrene automatically notifies people and businesses when they stop being registered as a board member, CEO (daglig leder) or managing owner. The letter goes to the person's Altinn inbox, so anyone removed without their knowledge can react quickly. The Government said the change, required by the new register laws, will help stop attempts to hijack companies with false filings.
Brønnøysundregistrene announced on 11 May 2026 that it is introducing automatic notification to people and businesses who are no longer registered in key roles, under new requirements in the Central Coordinating Register Act and Business Register Act.
What changed
- When someone stops being registered as a board member, chief executive (daglig leder) or managing owner (bestyrende reder), they are told directly.
- The notice is a letter in the recipient's Altinn inbox. Individuals are alerted digitally or by post, and businesses through their registered notification addresses.
- The aim is to catch errors and attempts at company hijacking through false change notifications. The Minister of Trade and Industry said it would make it easier to stop corporate identity theft.
- In most cases the recipient does not need to do anything.
Who is affected
Directors and CEOs of Norwegian companies, and businesses whose notification addresses are on the register.
What to do
Make sure notification addresses in the Central Coordinating Register are current, and that outgoing directors know they will receive a letter.
