SEC adopts EDGAR Next: individual logins and account administrators for every filer
On 27 September 2024 the SEC adopted EDGAR Next. Everyone filing on EDGAR must use an individual Login.gov account with multi-factor authentication, and each filer must authorise at least two account administrators who confirm annually who may file. Compliance was required from 15 September 2025.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) adopted rule and form amendments on 27 September 2024 that change how filers access EDGAR, the system for all filings under the federal securities laws. It proposed them in September 2023.
What changed
- Shared access codes give way to individual credentials. Everyone acting for a filer must sign in with a Login.gov account and complete multi-factor authentication.
- Each filer must authorise at least two individuals as account administrators. One is allowed for an individual or single-member company.
- Account administrators manage who can file for the company on an EDGAR dashboard. Each year they confirm that everyone listed is authorised and that the filer's details are accurate.
- Optional APIs let filers and filing agents file and manage accounts machine to machine.
Who is affected
Every SEC filer, including companies, insiders filing ownership reports, and the company secretaries and filing agents who file for them.
Later developments
The transition began on 24 March 2025. Compliance was required from 15 September 2025. Filers that had not enrolled by then could not file until they did, and enrolment stayed open until 19 December 2025.
