Spain requires 40% of listed company boards to be women or men
Spain's Organic Law 2/2024 of 1 August 2024 on equal representation, in force from 22 August 2024, requires the boards of listed companies to include at least 40% of the under-represented sex. The 35 largest listed companies must comply by 30 June 2026 and other listed companies by 30 June 2027. Large public-interest entities must reach 33% by 30 June 2026 and 40% by 2029, and breaches are a serious infringement under the securities law.
The law implements the EU's Women on Boards Directive (2022/2381) and amends article 529 bis of the Capital Companies Act.
